Two Oceans Aquarium
With mesmerising live ocean exhibitions and over 8 000 sea animals on display, this world-class Aquarium is, unsurprisingly, one of Cape Town’s premier tourist destinations, and a great option for family outings on rainy days. Standout exhibits include the Predator Exhibit (sharks!), Penguin Exhibit, and the I&J Ocean Exhibit with its 10-metre-long underwater tunnel. Kids will also love the Touch Pool and Microscope Exhibit, where they can get up close with sea anemones.
Boulders Beach Penguin Colony
Here exists a protected colony of African penguins which can be viewed in their natural habitat via wooden walkways. There is also an excellent beach for swimming nearby. The Beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents and large waves.
Iziko South African Museum.
Inhabited by an array of prehistoric creatures, the natural history museum is an excellent option for parents seeking ways to keep children occupied on rainy days. Founded in 1825, it is South Africa’s oldest museum, with exhibitions of more than 1.5 million specimens – accumulated over almost 200 years – including ancient fossils and stone tools, rock and meteorite samples. There are lifelike recreations of South Africa’s indigenous people using real pieces, as well as marine and wild animal displays and features. Museum also contains a unique collection of whale skeletons, including a giant 20.5-metre blue whale skeleton.
Victoria and Alfred Waterfront food market & Watershed.
In the 19th century, the Old Power Station brought power to the Cape Town dockyard, blazing a trail for trade in Cape Town and the continent. Today, this powerhouse of innovation is still generating bright ideas through the V&A Food Market. Here, you’ll find more than 42 food and beverage stalls, selling an array of artisanal products. The bustling warehouse has indoor seating available for colder nights.
Nearby, beside the Two Oceans Aquarium, you’ll find The Watershed, a vibrant space with over 150 tenants selling a wide range of goods from fashion and jewellery to ceramics, art, toys and musical instruments.
